Valve Filled the DotA Trademark - DotA-Blog

Valve Filled the DotA Trademark

It seems things start to get serious here. After the recent tweets about DotA from the Duke Nukem voice actor, recently Valve has just filled the trademark application for 'DOTA'. This step is a must if IceFrog and Valve want to continue using DotA as their new game title and don't wanna have trouble with the copyright or legal issues. And looking on how DotA word is already spread and really popular (it might be more popular than Warcraft III itself), this move will put them in advantage compared to the other DotA-like games (League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, ect).

If you wanna see the details about the trademark application, check it out on USPTO:

Mark 'DOTA'
Standard Character claim: Yes
Current Status: Newly filed application, not yet assigned to an examining attorney.
Date of Status: 2010-08-10
Filing Date: 2010-08-06

Honestly, this is a really smart move. Even though the current DotA is a Warcraft III custom map, the word 'DOTA' itself is not yet a trademark (please correct me if i'm wrong) and has a very high commercial value. I think it won't be hard for Valve (with IceFrog support) to get the approval for this application. Well, let's see what'll happen on the next day. Stay tune on DotA-Blog for more news!

PS: Maybe this is the reason why IceFrog change the latest map name from DotA-Allstars, into only DotA.

Alief, YOU ROCK! I'd be lost without your blog, it really brings the news fast. I agree that it's a smart move from Valve, and if DotA(DOTA) continues the way as it has so far, then LoL and HoN don't stand a chance!

  10. DotA will be corrupted if Valve taking over. If the model of the hero same as DotA, Blizzard can do something because it is their copyright. Blizzard suppose collaborate with IceFrog to improve the graphic and gameplay. If there is StarCraft why Blizzard don't want take the gold chances with DotA. Such a wasted, these taking over its like another game making such LoL or HoN.

  11. I am pretty sure their bastard corporation gonna make us pay to play...

  13. You can't put a price tag on DotA. If IceFrog is also working on this, then nobody should complain, it will just make the game better, unlike HoN or LoL who just took DotA and placed it in a different package.

  14. I played HoN and LoL. When I played these game, I think DotA is still the best. What valve is doing is making another HoN or LoL. Now there are many games alike DotA. These are tearing DotA player to move to another different and better engine. Sooner or later the originality of DotA will fade or worst could be is die. BTW i don't mind if its free or Purchase version but mostly people like it free, right? :)

So i don't want to say much. What i can say to IceFrog is good luck on what his doing and for all please support the DotA community.

  15. I played HoN too, and I believe that DotA is still better, but this way, DotA will become a trademark, and HoN won't be able to copy it anymore.

  25. I doubt that we have to pay . Many players will quit dota if they are gonna make us pay ..

    ReplyDelete
  26. sure why..not but it should be free ...

  27. i think dota will be good wherever it goes if icefrog is on it.. hes by far the most astounding logic based mind. his reasoning for each aspect of the game dota itself is great. some game just go for the graphic.. avalon heroes for instance.. it has lotsa graphic,, but its soo shallow. the ultimate skill for each character is almost the same that it made me sad seing how the game is ripping off money from other paying player..i wont mind paying if its as good as the current dota, heck ill throw in some extra cash if the game's graphic is updated ! jus keep up the good work dude!!

  28. So annoying! If we must pay! But like HON, maybe there is a local server. So we don't gonna pay. It's free. In Indonesia, there is local server like indogamers, not international. Hope can be like that too.

  29. In my opinion, if this "DotA" is not free. Other people might as well play TFT. I mean come on. How about those people who doesn't have the money to pay for it but has the money to play free. Icefrog is in it so it might as well be free. Whatever happens. I just wish that DotA would be still as famous and as worldly played as it is today when it is done.

  30. Is there any new news about valve's dota?

  31. DOTA means Dawn Of The Ancients :-).

    ReplyDelete
  32. REALLY IMPORTANT, THERE SHOULD BE A BLOG POST ABOUT THIS:

Pendragon and Guinsoo split ways with Icefrog. Reason? Pendragon and Guinsoo wanted to commercialize DotA; They made League of Legends. Icefrog didn't.

Look at this now! Suddenly he is in a project with Valve for making a new DotA game, which will most certainly be a regular game you pay for.

To make things worse, Icefrog has been secretly working for S2 Games, in other words, Heroes of Newerth since the game's start!

All in all, Icefrog is... A lying, hypocritical and double crossing bastard. Yay.

  33. you motherfucking nerd! dota is gonna be pay per play and all you have to say is 1st blood?

  34. LOL, FOR ME THERE SHOULD BE A LAN AVAILABLE FOR VALVE DOTA BECAUSE I DONT WANT TO PAY TO PLAY

  35. so many retards here... if you dont want to pay - just play regular warcraft 3 dota

anyways, it wont cost more than 30$ (cuz thats how much HoN costs) and 30$ is really cheap for a video game (a GREAT video game)

    ReplyDelete
  36. They gonna make it more expensive i bet cos the name is DOTA compared to other games such as HoN and LoL

  37. CHECK THIS OUT !!!August 20, 2010 at 6:12 PM

THIS IS WHAT I'M ABSOLUTELY AFRAID >> if DotA pay 2 play.. our younger generation (kids) of DotA will GONE and slowly.. THERE ARE NO PURE BORN OF HIGH SKILLED, PROFESSIONAL, AND REAL OTAKU DOTA PLAYERS.. DOTA WILL FULL OF OLD AGING NOOBS.. DOTA WILL GONE

  38. Why not make it DooTA? in my country there's a dialect that use this word DooTA which means "Push" (Taken from Cebuano dialect) im noob though.

  39. I do not care if its P2P or free ,i have not played for 6 months now but i keep track of news regarding dota...i am hoping for only 1 thing now , i hope Icefrog will get a shit load of money no matter what happens, you my Sir deserve it more than any1 in the world of games for giving us so much joy and keeping us on our toes all this time with your amazing updates.A lot of people do not realize that that dota is not a game its not a wc3 custom map and for sure is not Hon ,Lol etc... ICEFROG IS DOTA and without him ...no words ...Best regards from [SA] and all of its members

    ReplyDelete
  40. Well... Valve developed counter-strike. Yes, it`s p2p, and yet it`s so full of private servers and no-steams everywhere that it doesn`t matter much. Hell, even warcraft 3 TFT has a private for every country in the world. Hope Icey will turn DotA accessible and popular tough. If it`s launched i am most probably going to play, private or not.

  41. i hope itll have lan function unlike sc2 which really sucks hard without lan if we cant play with our friends locally without the need of going online.....

    ReplyDelete
  42. How many of use managed to get a free-cracked version of Wc3 + Frozen Throne JUST to play DotA? And at the same time free online servers emerged mainly for the cracked version's of wc3.
I'm confident that the same will happen if Valve's DotA is P2P

    ReplyDelete
  43. i don't think it will be a commercial p2p game. It will be more like, "buy a copy 2 play" game. like CS and left 4 dead..

Yap it will still be a lan and a garena game. Looking forward to it since there are swarms of pirate sites out there and valve always made games with a full package character. (semi 3d)
